Vinesh Phogat’s Silver Medal Appeal: CAS Hearing Ends, IOA Hopeful

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for a silver medal at the Paris Olympics has concluded, with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) optimistic about a positive outcome. Vinesh was disqualified from the women’s 50kg freestyle final for being 100 grams over the weight limit and is now seeking a joint silver medal.

The hearing took place at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), where Vinesh attended virtually. Her case was presented by senior lawyers Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania, while United World Wrestling represented the other side.

The IOA has expressed strong support for Vinesh, praising her contributions to Indian wrestling. IOA president PT Usha thanked the legal team and reaffirmed their commitment to standing by Vinesh, no matter the outcome.

While an interim decision was expected on Friday, no official announcement has been made yet. The CAS arbitrator hinted that a decision might come soon, followed by a detailed explanation.

IOC president Thomas Bach commented on the case, acknowledging the difficulty in making such decisions and the potential implications for other sports.

The final decision is eagerly awaited, as it could impact Vinesh’s future and the broader wrestling community.
