The Supreme Court of India is set to resume its hearing today on the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will present a status report on the investigation to the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, in a sealed cover.
The case has drawn national attention, with the Supreme Court taking suo motu cognizance and criticizing the West Bengal government for its handling of the situation. The court has also asked the state government to report on the mob that vandalized the hospital during a peaceful protest.
As part of the investigation, the CBI has been questioning the former principal of RG Kar Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, for six consecutive days.
In response to the ongoing protests by doctors’ organizations across the country, the Supreme Court has established a national task force to address the safety of medical professionals, particularly women. The task force has been given three weeks to submit an interim report and two months for a final report. Doctors’ organizations have agreed to cooperate with the task force and have called for a central law to ensure their safety.
