EU regulators claim Apple’s App Store rules violate the Digital Markets Act (DMA), preventing developers from steering consumers to alternative purchasing options. These rules block developers from sharing pricing information or promoting offers available outside the App Store.
The European Commission’s investigation, launched in March, found that Apple’s practices limit competition. If confirmed, Apple could face billions in fines by March 2025, up to 10% of its global revenue ($383 billion in 2023) or 20% for repeat offenses. This follows a previous €1.8 billion fine related to a Spotify complaint.
Other tech giants like Google, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and ByteDance are also under scrutiny to comply with the DMA. The EU’s enforcement aims to increase competition among major tech firms.
