Apple Supplier Foxconn Asked to Cut Power Use in Vietnam

Vietnamese officials have asked Foxconn, an Apple supplier, to cut its power use by 30% at its northern plants. This voluntary move aims to prevent power shortages like those last summer, which caused over a billion dollars in losses.

The power-saving request is part of a broader effort to avoid future shortages. Last year’s heat wave caused significant economic damage, leading the government to delay maintenance on coal plants and increase coal imports to meet demand.

Vietnam is attracting more multinational companies, with Apple increasing its suppliers in the country from 25 to 35. Despite the power-saving request, production at Foxconn has not been affected.

Local power authorities in Bac Giang province, where Foxconn assembles Apple products, have asked industrial parks to save electricity to support the power system. The exact duration and details of the request are not specified.
