FBI Director Christopher Wray has raised alarm bells about the looming threat of Chinese hackers targeting critical infrastructure in the United States. Speaking at the 2024 Vanderbilt Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats, Wray cautioned that these hackers are waiting for the “right moment” to strike.
Wray emphasized that China views every sector vital to American society as fair game in its quest for global dominance. He highlighted the country’s intention to disrupt civilian infrastructure to sow panic and weaken America’s resolve. According to Wray, China’s tactics include stealing intellectual property, technology, and research from key American industries, such as pipeline operators.
The FBI director pointed out that China’s targeting of critical infrastructure is extensive and ongoing. He warned of potential cyberattacks designed to cause widespread disruption and chaos. Wray recounted a specific incident where Chinese hackers swiftly obtained data related to infrastructure control and monitoring systems, indicating sinister intentions beyond mere economic gain.
To counter these threats, Wray emphasized the importance of collaboration between law enforcement, military, and intelligence agencies. He urged companies to proactively engage with their local FBI field offices to enhance preparedness and response measures.
This warning echoes Wray’s earlier testimony before a House Select Committee, where he highlighted the vulnerability of essential systems like the electrical grid, oil and gas pipelines, transportation networks, and water treatment plants to Chinese cyberattacks.
In essence, Wray’s message is clear: the threat posed by Chinese hackers to US infrastructure is real and ongoing, requiring concerted efforts from both government and private sectors to mitigate the risks and safeguard national security.
