A new report indicates that OpenAI may unveil GPT-5, the latest iteration of its revolutionary large language model, in the upcoming months.
OpenAI, under the leadership of Sam Altman, is potentially gearing up to launch GPT-5, the forthcoming iteration of its advanced multimodal large language model, in the next few months. According to a Business Insider report, which cites two sources familiar with the matter, OpenAI might unveil GPT-5 around mid-year, during the summer season. The company has already been providing demonstrations of GPT-5 to its enterprise clients.
One CEO who had an early look at GPT-5 praised its capabilities, describing it as “materially better,” the report notes. Since sales to enterprise customers represent a significant revenue channel for OpenAI, it’s strategic for the company to showcase these advanced features to such clients.
Meanwhile, the company is advancing its technology applications by venturing into humanoid robotics. OpenAI plans to partner with Figure AI to create humanoid robots intended for use in various workforce settings.
The collaboration between OpenAI and Figure AI will merge OpenAI’s advanced research capabilities with Figure’s expertise in both hardware and software for robotics. Figure’s goal is to expedite the development of its humanoid robots by equipping them with the ability to process and reason using natural language.
Humanoid robotics is becoming increasingly popular among major tech companies, all competing to develop their own innovative solutions. For instance, NVIDIA recently launched Project GR00T, a versatile foundation model specifically designed for humanoid robots. Alongside this, NVIDIA introduced a new computing platform named Jetson Thor for humanoid robots and announced enhancements to its Isaac robotics platform.
This year, OpenAI enhanced its portfolio beyond the ChatGPT chatbot and the DALL·E image generator by introducing Sora, an innovative AI software capable of creating hyper-realistic one-minute videos from text prompts. Sora is currently in the red teaming phase, during which the company is pinpointing and addressing potential system vulnerabilities.
However, the release of GPT-5 might be further down the line than anticipated, as it apparently has not yet entered the red teaming phase. Moreover, the launch timeline could extend if OpenAI encounters any significant issues during the demonstration or testing phases.
