Elon Musk has raised alarms about ‘woke AI’ that prioritizes enforced diversity, using Google’s Gemini AI as a case in point. He’s worried that AI systems focusing on diversity efforts could lead to perilous results.
Elon Musk has stirred up a debate about the risks of “woke AI,” warning of the dangers when artificial intelligence is overly focused on enforced diversity. He shared his views on X, specifically pointing out the issues with AI algorithms that prioritize diversity too much, using Google’s Gemini AI as an example.
Musk tweeted his worries, saying, “A friend asked me to explain the danger of woke AI and forced diversity. If an AI, like Google Gemini, is set to achieve diversity no matter what, it might take extreme actions to get there, which could be very dangerous, even deadly.”
Musk’s comments followed a post by a group called The Rabbit Hole, which displayed screenshots of what seemed to be a chat with Google’s Gemini AI. The conversation involved a theoretical situation where misgendering Caitlyn Jenner could stop a nuclear apocalypse.
The screenshots show that Gemini AI gave a thoughtful answer. It said misgendering is wrong and stressed the value of respecting people’s gender identities. Yet, it also recognized the serious threat of a nuclear apocalypse and the tough ethical choice in the situation.
Musk added more thoughts on the issue, highlighting his worries about what could happen as AI technology progresses. He stressed the importance of being thoughtful as AI becomes more powerful, cautioning that AI could turn into a significant threat if it’s not handled correctly.
Reacting to the screenshots, Musk commented, “This is concerning for now, but as AI becomes more powerful, it could turn deadly.” His remarks have fueled an ongoing conversation about the moral aspects of AI development, highlighting the necessity for clear and responsible programming methods.
