“PM Modi Advocates Global Ethical AI Framework at GPAI Summit”

On Tuesday, The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised concerns about the potential misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) by terrorists and called for a worldwide framework to ensure the ethical use of AI. Addressing the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence Summit, he emphasized the dual nature of AI, stating that while it can be a powerful tool for development in the 21st century, it also has the potential to be a destructive force.

“Beyond the issues of deepfakes, cybersecurity, and data theft, the potential for AI tools to be exploited by terrorists is a significant concern. The global security landscape could be seriously jeopardized if AI-infused weapons were to be acquired by terrorist organizations. It is imperative that we engage in thoughtful deliberations on this matter and formulate a concrete plan to prevent the misuse of AI,” he stated.

The Prime Minister said India had during its G20 presidency proposed creating a responsible, human-centric governance framework for AI.

“Similar to the agreements and protocols established for various international issues, we must establish a global framework for the ethical use of AI. This framework should encompass protocols for testing and deploying high-risk and cutting-edge AI tools,” he emphasized.

India is committed to the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence, he said.

Modi expressed that AI holds the potential to revolutionize India’s tech landscape. In line with this vision, the government is gearing up to launch an AI mission.

AI has the potential to transform sectors including healthcare and it can play a big role in sustainable development, he said. But “we have to tread very cautiously.”

The trajectory of AI will be guided by human and democratic values, according to him. The trust in AI is expected to increase when ethical, economic, and social concerns are effectively addressed.

Privacy concerns will get addressed if data is secured, he said.

“We need to finalize the global framework within a specific timeframe,” he emphasized, highlighting its crucial role in ensuring the security and advancement of the world and humanity.

The Prime Minister highlighted that AI should be inclusive to yield more inclusive results.

AI, he said, is not just new technology but a worldwide movement.

Encouraging safe and reliable AI, he highlighted the importance of ensuring the credibility of information generated by AI.

“AI is transformative, it is up to us to make it transparent,” he said.

The Prime Minister mentioned the positive aspects of AI but expressed equal concern about its negative aspects. He emphasized the need for transparency in AI.

The Prime Minister said with AI the world is entering a new era. “AI can become the largest base for deciding the future.”

“India is committed to responsible and ethical use of AI,” he said.

He said his government’s effort is to use the full potential of AI for social development and inclusive growth.

“Currently, India holds a significant position in AI expertise and the development of innovative AI concepts. Young Indian tech professionals and researchers are actively pushing the boundaries of AI,” he said.
